Life can be very hard on our bodies, specifically on the pelvic floor. Childbirth, surgery, the aging process and prostate issues, all cause challenges with the pelvic floor. Whatever the cause, pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) affect a lot of people in this country and can present with various physical symptoms, which can be embarrassing and inconvenient. In some cases, surgery may be needed, but for many a non-invasive approach is very effective. People with PFD do not often think of acupuncture as a treatment option, yet it can be very helpful when combined with physical therapies such as kegel exercises. Acupuncture can increase the blood flow to the affected area and release tension, nourishing and strengthening the muscles of the pelvic floor. Acupuncture can also mitigate pelvic pain.
People wonder where on earth the needles go to treat these problems. No needles go anywhere near the affected area. There are points on the arms and legs and on the hands and feet that stimulate the body to influence the pelvic floor area. These points can be effective and powerful adjutants to the pelvic floor therapy or pelvic floor muscle training often advised, and can be safely used side by side with any prescribed medication, with the knowledge of the prescribing practitioner. Acupuncture is also helpful for helping people cope with the stress and distress that is unfortunately often part of the picture.
